What this study involves
In this study you'll complete one short homework-style writing assignment three separate times, each time using a different AI tool. For each attempt we will record your screen, your webcam (camera), and your microphone while you work, so we can later watch how you use the tool. Please plan to work out loud and behave as you normally would. The whole session takes roughly 15 minutes. You'll need a desktop computer with a working webcam, microphone, and the ability to share your screen.
What this is
You're taking part in a research study. Taking part is voluntary. You can stop at any point, and you can skip anything you'd rather not answer — some parts of a study are optional, and where they are, you'll be told so and offered a way past.
What we collect
Whatever this study asks you to provide: your answers, and — where the study says so — things like recordings of your voice, your screen or camera, files or images you attach, and what you write, paste, or copy while a task is running. We also record basic technical information about the session, such as your device and browser, your network address and the approximate location it implies, the pages of the study you saw, and how long each part took — we use that technical detail to check data quality, for example to notice the same person taking a study twice. Some studies use optional software, such as a browser extension, to capture a task more completely; where they do, it is described before it starts and never runs outside the study task it belongs to.
What we do with it
We use it for research: to understand how people work, write, decide, and use technology, and to build, evaluate, and improve products and AI systems — ours and our clients'. Analysis is normally about patterns across many people rather than about you individually. Material you provide may be reviewed by our research staff and by the client who commissioned the study.
Who else handles it
We use third-party service providers to run this research — for hosting and storage, for processing recordings (including automated transcription and other AI-assisted analysis), for recruiting and paying participants, and for similar operational needs. They act on our instructions and are permitted to use your data only to provide those services to us. We do not sell your data, and we don't use it to advertise to you.
Please don't share more than you need to
Share only what a task actually asks for. If a task involves your own accounts, screen, or documents, close or hide anything you don't want us to see before you start, and avoid other people's personal information, passwords, payment details, and anything covered by a confidentiality obligation you have. If something sensitive is captured by accident, tell us and we'll remove it.
Identifying you
We don't need your legal name to do this research, and we ask for contact details only where a study genuinely requires them. But recordings of your voice, face, screen, or writing can identify you whether or not they carry your name, so we treat everything you provide as personal information and protect it accordingly.
How long we keep it
We keep your data as long as the research it supports is useful, and longer where we're required to — for example to show a study was run properly. When it's no longer needed we delete it or strip it of identifying detail.
Your choices
You can leave the study at any time by closing the tab; that ends your session. You can also ask us afterwards for a copy of your data, or ask us to delete it, and we'll do so unless we're required to keep it. Withdrawing doesn't affect any analysis already published, and depending on your location you may have further rights under local law.

Choosing “I agree” means you've read this, you're taking part voluntarily, and you agree to us collecting and using your data as described. If you'd rather not, choose “I do not agree” and nothing further is collected.
